Foolish Questions

Where can a man buy a cap for his knee?
Or a key for the lock of his hair?
And can his eyes be called a school?
I would think : there are pupils there!

What jewels are found in the crown of his head,
And who walks on the bridge of his nose?
Can he use, in building the roof of his mouth,
The nails on the end of his toes?

Can the crook of his elbow be sent to jail :
If it can, well, then, what did it do?
And how does he sharpen his should blades?
I'll be hanged if I know : do you?

Can he sit in the shade of the palm of his hand,
And beat time with the drum in his ear?
Can the calf of his leg eat the corn on his toe?
There's somethin' pretty strange around here!

Atal Behari Vajpayee's Poem

Here is the translation of a poem (originally in Hindi) by the great Atal Behari Vajpayee, former Prime Minister of India as well as a person liked by people across all political parties :

Let's light the lamp again
It's dark at stark noon,
The sun defeated by shadow,
Let's bring out the inner essence,
Let's flame the blown wick,
Let's light the lamp again.
We have taken path as goal,
The goal has disappeared from before eyes,
In fascination for the present,
Let's not forget about tomorrow to come,
Let's light the lamp again.
Sacrifice is incomplete, so is Yajna,
Surrounded by obstacles of our own,
To firm up the final victory
The new Dadhichi melts his bones,
Let's light the lamp again.

Not at a Loss

I translated this popular poem from Hindi. How do you like it?

Never at a Loss (Haar Nahin Hoti)

Scared of waves, boat is never across,
Those who try are never at a loss.

Tiny ant when sets out with grain
Climbs up and trips down again
Trust in heart fills courage in veins
Climbing and falling and climbing again
Ultimately its hard work is not lost
Those who try are never at a loss.

A diver plunges deep in the sea
Goes and returns with hands empty
Pearls are hard to find in the water deep
Redoubled motivation still he keeps
Empty every time are not his hopes
Those who try are never at a loss.

Failure is a challenge, accept it.
Look for shortcoming and improve it.
Rest not, sleep not until success is attained,
Never flee until struggles are contained,
Without effort you never get kudos,
Those who try are never at a loss.

Your Indifference

Another Hindi poem by Urvashi Jahnavi Aggarwal, which I rendered into English :

Your indifference frightens me,
Why lovely my house appears to me.

Though I am at my goal,
Why then incomplete journey it appears to me.

No one stayed with permeating pain,
Waiting for someone a milestone it appears to me.

Why it touched and went leaving colonies sad,
Sunken in grief this town appears to me.

Wounded by a sweet dagger was I,
Some beloved relation it appears to me.

I saw a dream shattered on the ground,
Broken is the wing of some bird it appears to me.

The neighbours must have fed them a bribe
The pigeon has flown away it appears to me.

Lie I alone in a corner of the house,
The town has aged it appears to me.

Conversed with God last night in dream,
Urvashi this is effect of prayer it appears to me.

Tribute to Children Killed in Peshawar

Tormented I am by thy news in Pak
Breached is my patience, how to have it baulked.

In the name of God, you have slaughtered His own tots,
Right in the school you have killed the innocent,
O merciless, of their age you had better thought.

What made you allow the mother to live?
Why God has bestowed eyes on me?
I wish, O God, to put to fire my sight.

O tyrants, was this place for an act of terror?
Had you heeded the call of your mother!
Unheard of such things, I have suffered this hurt.

A father screamed, "Oh! You have shattered my dream!
You have crushed the rose before it could bloom."
Never was it the age to put him in graveyard.

You mother appears to have fed you, not milk, but blood,
You must never have seen water, you have bathed in blood.
What genes you have inherited, now we must root them out.

My mind echoes with nothing but the sound of gunshots,
It echoes with the trauma that suffered the tiny tots.
They had gone with schoolbags, but now lie in shrouds.

I wish, O God, to write my heart out.
In your name were the children squeezed out.
Vashi asks who has taught you this, O terror brat?

Narendra Modi - A Poem

Here is a poem by Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India
You will feel proud of the man.
Inspiration for New Life
Mother
I bow to thy feet.

The final day of the camp.
Until yesterday
There was rush and work and urge for whose construction
Now inclines towards dispersal all that arrangement
These short-term arrangements
Are like the symbols of human life!
This world too is like this!
Who doesn’t know it is an illusion?
But why then human mind
Get emancipated from it?
All this is meaningless.
This sorrow, this pleasure, this bliss,
This satisfaction, this tendency, this aspiration,
This desire – all that are transient.
Perhaps satisfaction gives a fleeting bliss,
Maybe mental resolution will be achieved,
Maybe there will be contentment to conquer the others,
But this satisfaction too is transient.
As it is, the joy of attainment in the mortal world is especially transient.
Still, Mother, everybody including me
Is after achievement.
Why so? In fact, in human heart
Where is expected to cultivate culture
Why does there arises
A tempest of such transient tendencies?
This is the tempest that raises human
From his base life
To throw far.
Mother…as a human I too
Will be a victim as natural.
Eternal desires, eternal satisfaction,
Awakening of eternal desires,
Is there no way out?
Perhaps the eternal desires will enlighten
The path of eternally contented life.
The discovery of that path is
The greatest introspection of human life.
I have experienced the bliss of introvert life.
There is contentment of fulfilment.
Extrovert life may be impressive,
But not inspiring.
Extrovert life will focus on the aura,
But introvert life will manifest inner-self.
Inner life has no noise,
It is replete with silent peace.
A quiet stream flows continuously.
This stream may not be able to fertilise
The whole land, but this quiet stream
Certainly infuses life into barren land.
It too has unique bliss.
The stream creates a true, quiet dialogue,
In which melody of music jingles
And then human tingles with it.
How short-lived is the flow.
No sound, no noise, no mass like a lake,
No tempest like an ocean, no flow like a river,
Still the stream is self-contented!
Tiny strength of it even
Marks multitude within it.
Yes, this all is grateful to introvert abidance.
So its area of influence
Sharpness of its impact – is not all despite size,
How sharp is its motivation?
It is the outcome of that discontinuous flow without a desire.
My eternal flow of inner-self is linked to it inseparably.
No destination, no rest is possible.
This liveliness of its becomes fragrant,
Inspires for new life.
Mother…all this is true yet
I am going against it.
Free from quiet, healthy mind,
I am seeking noise.
No confusion exists in the mind.
Mother…I am aware.
Now this body has to ascend a new theatre.
I have to adorn it as per the new theatre.
I have to transform as per the new theatre
All my organs of the body –
Mind, intellect, heart.
Mother…it will occur with your blessings,
You will have to make feel liveliness there,
But I am after the soul, the inner soul
Now I shall be with you by this inner soul.
How I appear before the world
Has no significance in my heart.
The eternal flow of my inner-self
Is inseparably connected to you.
No goal, no rest is possible.
Perhaps this devotion of mine
Will preserve me in this inner-outer situation.
