Khajuraho, located near Panna in Madhya Pradesh, is a large complex with a number of
Hindu and Jain temples. On seeing the erotic carvings on temples, it would be erroneous to think that they are more of a tourist attraction than a religious
one; in fact, they symbolise the sublime idea of spirituality as connected with the world, but this essence has been lost to us. The temples, all carved from stone, are so magnificent that Khajuraho has
been notified as one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Most of these temples
were built in the tenth and eleventh century by Chandela kings. Of these, the
most famous is the Kandariya Mahadeva Temple. More temples are being excavated
and it is worth to visit such temples being dug out. You can visit these
temples to know how excavation is undertaken and how we unearth our past
history.
