This is the Augharnath Temple, popularly called Kali Paltan Mandir, in Meerut, and is the origin point of the 1857 Revolution, also called First War of Freedom, which shook the very foundation of the East India Company rule in India. This temple got its name of Kali Paltan from the native platoons, the soldiers of which were called Black Sepoys (meaning the platoon of the black soldiers). A saint of this temple incited the soldiers who came to fill water from the well located in this temple. It is a prominent place in Meerut and is visited by thousands of people daily, and in times of festivals, esp. during the Hindu month of Shravan, about a million people come here bringing Ganga water all the way from Haridwar on foot to offer to the Shiv Linga here. A place worth a visit!
