Gandhiji was one of the greatest political leaders of the
world. He was the main leader in the movement for India's Independence. We got
freedom due to his continued agitation.
Mahatma Gandhi was born on 2 October, 1869 at Porbandar in
Gujarat. His father’s name was Karamchand Gandhi and Putli Bai was his mother.
Gandhiji’s full name was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. He was
very honest and truthful from his very childhood. He was a very modest student. After passing
matriculation examination, he went to England to become a barrister. On his
return from England, Gandhiji went to South Africa in connection with a case.
There he started his political career against the British rulers. He came back
to India and led the freedom movement against the British Government.
Gandhiji started Satyagraha, Non-cooperation and Civil
Disobedience movements and became very successful. He also started the Salt
Satyagraha and the Quit India Movement with the help of patriotic Indians.
Gandhiji was not only a great political leader but also a
great man. He led a saintly life and was against all sorts of injustice and
inequality in the society. He wanted to establish the Ram Rajya in which all
men would live in peace and happiness.
Gandhiji was assassinated on 30 January, 1948 soon after
independence. The people of India respectfully call him the Father of the
Nation for his great contribution to the country.
