NOUNS : POSITION AND FUNCTIONS

A Noun can be placed in a sentence at different places. Its function depends on its position.
1.      As Subject of a Verb :
The large brown sack had rice in it.
The boy playing in the street is my friend.
2.      As Direct Object of a Verb :
The coach trained the player in bowling.
She was knitting a sweater.
3.      As Indirect Object of a Verb :
The teacher offered the student a reward.
The guest brought the boy a computer game.  
4.      As Object of a Preposition :
They were going to school.
Let us all pray for his health.
5.      As Modifier of Another Noun : The Noun in this capacity functions like an Adjective :
The table fan stopped functioning at midnight.
He is a film star.
6.      As Complement :
Our teacher is a graduate.
You will be an engineer one day.
