A candidate appearing for an interview should be fully prepared to face any kind of question under the sun. As we have discussed, he should, in particular, pay regard to his dreams, aspirations, ambitions and career advancement. This one aspect also demands, among other things, the knowledge of the organisation he is facing the interview for. Being optimistic is good, but he should also be ready to face the worst, so there should be contingency plan in place. An interviewer is likely to ask a candidate what his alternative plans are only to see how well the candidatde has prepared to face actual ground situations, because it manifests his prowess to plan things well in advance. See for example :
Question : What do you think you would do if you do not get this job?
Answer : I am quite optimistic by nature. I am sure that I will make it. In case I fail, I shall try again with renewed vigour and redoubled effort to make merit next time.
Question : But I am afraid that vacancies in the post are very limited and it is unlikely for them to fall vacant in near future.
Answer : In that case I shall make an alternative plan and consider my preferences again.
Analysis : It can be seen that the interviewee has not done his homework well. He does not know about the organisation and much less about the number of posts and their frequency of falling vacant in the near future. The second shortcoming in the answer is that he does not seem to have prepared an alternative plan which he should have because no one can be sure of getting a job. It may be borne in mind that all wrong or incorrect or incomplete answers are liable to be probed further so that the interviewers are able to judge him in proper perspective. It is therefore, advisable to think about all contingencies in advance than to face the interview groping in dark.
