Here is a story from the life of Sukhdev, the great martyr, who sacrificed his life along with Bhagat Singh and Rajguru, this day in 1931. This story is from one of my children's storybook.
Sukhdev was a great revolutionary. He gave his life for our sake. We are free because people like him sacrificed their lives for us. We shall tell you a story from his childhood.
On Diwali, people worship God Ganesh and Goddess Lakshmi, so a lot of their posters are sold in the market. Sukhdev was playing in the street with his friends. His mother called him and said, "Go to market and buy a poster of Goddess Lakshmi."
Sukhdev went to market with his friends. The vendor was selling a lot of posters and pictures. He had displayed them on the wall and wire. Sukhdev looked at the splash of colours and searched for the poster he wanted. Suddenly, his eyes fell on the poster of Lakshmi Bai, the queen of Jhansi. She was a brave lady who fought for our country and gave up her life.
"Is this Rani Lakshmi Bai?" Sukhdev almost screamed in curiosity.
The shopkeeper looked at him and said, "Yes, will you buy this?"
"Yes, for certain," said Sukhdev. He paid the money and brought the poster home. He was very excited. He said to his mother, "Ma, look what I have brought."
"O stupid boy," his mother said looking at the poster, "this is not what I asked you to buy."
"I know, Ma," said Sukhdev. "Look at her. Riding a horse, holding reins in one hand and the sword in another, with her son on the back. How glorious!"
"Today we shall worship her too. Now go and bring another poster of Goddess Lakshmi, and this time, bring only what I have said," cautioned her mother.
