Mother Teresa was one of the greatest women of the world.
She was a champion of the poor and the distressed. She made India her beloved motherland.
Mother Teresa was born at Scopje in Yugoslavia on 23 August,
1910. She was then known as Agnes. At the age of eighteen, she came over to
Kolkata. She joined the Saint Merry School in Kolkata as a geography teacher.
After a few days, her attention drew to the distressed, the
suffering, the poor and the downtrodden people in the city. Mother left
teaching and started serving these suffering mortals. Then she founded various charitable organisations like the
Nirmal Hriday, Missionaries of Charity, Gandhi Prem Niwas, Sishu Bhawan,
Nirmala Kennedy Kendra etc. Within a few days her charitable organisations
spread throughout the world. To serve the sick and the poor was the mission of
the mother and her men. Mother Teresa really rendered yeoman service to the sick and the distressed people of the
society. Mother was honoured with various national and international awards
such as Kennedy International Award, Britain’s Order of Merit, Nehru Award,
Padmashree, Bharat Ratna and Nobel Peace Prize.
She died on 5 September, 1997 in Kolkata at the age of 87.
Her last rites were performed with
national honour. She will be remembered for ever. She has been beatified as a saint since, which is a tribute to her service to the humanity.
