Dr. Chandrashekhar Venkataraman was born on November 7, 1888
at a small village near Tiruchirapalli in Tamil Nadu. His parents were Ammal
Parvathy and Chandrashekar Aiyer.
The life of Dr. C.V. Raman shows that the quality of
scientific temper and discipline can
take the nation and the world to greater heights of development which would
bring happiness to mankind.
His educational background shows that one should study a
subject of one’s interest. At graduation level, he opted for physics which
interested him from his childhood despite strong opposition from his father. He
topped in the Indian Finance Service examination and was appointed as the
Assistant Accountant General in Calcutta at the young age of 19 years.
Here he got an opportunity to take active interest in
science and got all facilities to develop his talents. He wrote more than 15000
articles in fifty years. He also edited journals the Current and The Proceeding of
the Academy of Sciences. The journals helped the young scientists to
express their ideas so that further work could be done in their field of
interest.
Dr. C.V. Raman was interested in the phenomenon of sound and light from the age of early adolescence. It was discipline of his
mind which made him discover the ‘Raman Effect’. This discovery led to the
development of atomic science, photography etc. He played a vital role in
establishing the Raman Research Institute at Bangalore.
Dr. C.V. Raman has been awarded many prestigious awards which include the Nobel Prize for Physics,
Bharat Ratna etc. He is no more among us, but his life continues to inspire us.
