A flood is caused in many ways. Sometimes, a heavy rainfall
over many days together can cause a flood. The rainwater flows down the rivers,
running over the banks and flooding the adjacent
lands. Snow melts in mountains and flows down in rivers. Sometimes, a river can
suddenly divert its course and flood
a large area.
A flood is a natural calamity and takes place regularly in
certain areas. Floods cause a lot of destruction of life and property as areas
are inundated for over days. The
rush of water demolishes and carries away houses, topsoil, men and animals.
Floods, however, have always brought out the best in men.
They organise rescue and relief for
people whom they do not know even and from whom they expect no personal gain.
Voluntary organisations arrange relief camps and provide medical facilities.
People try their utmost to help the flood-stricken people. Money, food and
clothes are collected. Volunteers are sent to the flood-affected areas to help
the people. The government also grants them help. Recently, the government has
set up disaster management units all over the country to help the people during
different calamities, including floods.
The flood is a great evil. But it has some good effect. It
makes the soil fertile. It also washes away all impurities of land. Still we can never welcome a flood in its
terrible form.
