The word ‘discipline’ comes from the word ‘disciple’ meaning
a learner. Discipline means obedience
to the established rules of conduct. If any of these rules is broken, there is
trouble and the society suffers; hence arises the need of discipline.
In fact, discipline is the very basis of progress in every sphere of life, public or private. Without
it, there will be complete chaos and
disorder everywhere in our society. Discipline in schools and colleges requires
regular preparation of lessons and learning correct behaviour in the society. A
family cannot run well if its members do not follow the rules of conduct. An
army cannot win the battle if the soldiers do not obey the orders of the
commander. The teacher cannot properly teach in the class if the students are
not disciplined. Similarly, no play is possible if the players do not follow the
rules in the playground. Discipline is also necessary in a man’s individual
life. Without self-discipline, a man can never shine and succeed in life.
It has also to be remembered that those who are not
disciplined themselves cannot expect
obedience from others when they themselves are put in power. Conversely, indiscipline causes
disorder and nuisance. It destroys peace, progress and prosperity of the
institution. So, students and people at
large should follow discipline strictly to enjoy a happy corporate life.
