Use of Article 'The'

You can use Article 'the' in the following cases :

1. Use Article 'the' to show a definite person or thing that has been mentioned before; for example :

A man had a pet dog. The man took the pet dog daily for a walk. The walk of the man with the pet dog was always long.

The ground where he plays belongs to the government.

2. Article 'the' is used to show a definite person or thing; for example :

The principal has gone on leave today, so Mr. Jain is the principal of the school now.

The minister is likely to call on the President of India today.

3. Article 'the' is used before a Singular Noun to show its whole class; for example :

The blue whale is the largest animal on the earth.

The rocket is used to launch satellites into the space.

4. If Article 'the' is used before an Adjective, it shows a class; for example :

The mighty should guard the country. (means all mighty people)

The corrupt should not be allowed to fight elections. (means all corrupt people)

5. Article 'the' is used before the geographical Proper Nouns; for example :

the Ganga, the Ghaghra, the Sharada, the Sutlej

the Himalayas, the Vindhyas, the Andes

the Andamans, the West Indies islands (groups of islands and not single ones)

the Indian Ocean, the Pacific Ocean, the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal

the Republic of India, the United States, the United Kingdom (unions of states)

6.Article 'the' is used before the names of books, newspapers, journals, radio and television channels etc; for example :

The I Accuse dealt with the 1984 riots.

The Times of India is a popular newspaper.

The Colours has several popular programmes.

In practice, Article 'the' is not used for radio and television channels, sometimes even for newspapers and journals also.
