Rapid Fire Questions in Interview

When a candidate does not reply to a question satisfactorily, the interviewers either summarily reject him considering him an unsuitable candidate, on may ask further questions in order to probe him in depth. If the candidate still does not reply on track, he may be subjected to rapid fire questions, that is a volley of questions being asked in quick succession one after another; for example :
Question : You have mentioned in your curriculum vitae that you are fond of gardening. Are you?
Answer : Yes, sir.
Question : How many hours a day you devote to it?
Answer : Whenever I get time.
Question : Do you have sufficient place for gardening in your house?
Answer : No.
Question : Then how do you do gardening?
Answer : Sir, I visit the neighbourhood garden as and when I get time and watch plants and vegetation.
Question : Which flowers bloom in summer?
Answer : Rose...er...no...er...daisy...and...
Question : What are the fruits that you get to eat in this season?
Answer : Mango,....
Question : Which is the best vegetable that you like?
Answer : I like all the vegetables.
Question : If someone is deficient of vitamin C, which fruit or vegetable would you recommend?
Answer : I don’t know.
Question : Which area is known as the ‘mango belt’?
Answer : All are good.
Question : Why are the forests evergreen but one has to put in hard work to keep his garden green?
Answer : (Keeps silent.)
Analysis. Your guess is as good as that of mine. The candidate has made a mess of everything. The first thing that he ought to have done was not to mention a hobby which he knows not even a shred of. Had he mentioned it, then he should have endeavoured to gain some knowledge of it. Even if he had no knowledge of it, he should have replied cleverly so that he is not made to face the rapid fire questions. We always advise a candidate to stick to truth  whatever the situation. A man can learn and gain experience during the course of his tenure with the employer, but he cannot learn honesty anywhere. He would fumble whenever a slippery ground arises. As a matter of fact, when a question comes up regarding the field which the candidate has acquainted himself though not perfectly, he should grab the opportunity by including such facts which help him divulge his other traits. See for example a sample answer given that he does not know much of it :
“Sir, I have a small house so there is no space to make a garden. But I visit my friend’s house to fulfil this desire, regularly twice a week. Since this does not belong to me, I don’t want to impose upon them my choices. So what I do is to uproot grass and water the plants. I shall realize this hobby when I am in a position to own a bigger house.”
See, how many birds has the candidate struck with one stone. He has shown that he can go to any extent to realize his hobby. Second, he does not mind helping a friend in need. Third, he has a desire to do well in life so that he might own a big house. The interviewers see to it how a candidate makes his own way while facing problems.
